When Java was introduced to the world, one of the ideas was that you could embed it in legacy apps. So you would have a bunch of say, C code, and interface with the JVM via JNI and take advantage of Java's capabilities while easing the strain of a full port to Java.

I was curious if anyone had ever done this and if the results were worth it or not.

AFAIK Minecraft uses C code in its graphics library (OpenGL). So there's that.

Java would be a terrible language to embed. It's not really all that much higher level, and the VM is HUGE and takes forever to warm up.

Langauges like Lua are way better for this purpose. Especially since, with LuaJIT, it's about as fast (much faster if you count warm-up) as java, with much lower memory use.
