My company is delving into some UI work. First time we've tried this, so I did some research on the UI design process.

<-- PDF of the results. Any advice on this would be appreciated, but hopefully it helps someone as well.

Tl;dr: bureaucratic anal approach to art.

The problem is that companies are bureaucratic and like their processes. Besides, UI may be artistic, but it still has to follow company style guides while at the same time giving the user what is needed to use the software effectively. It's art and science combined, in a way.

More like art and politics.

Combine art and science you get Godel Escher Bach or Lisp, not corporate "design" art.
