My guess is that Curt tried to troll them, the reaction was surprisingly positive, and now he produces pony pseudo-fanart to keep potential fans/commissioners of his work roped in. If it was a short and temporary burst of pony troll art I wouldn't have suspected anything, but he still keeps on producing this stuff.
