cloud computing just got a little interesting; NVIDIA GPU over 'the cloud', console-level gaming without the console, software virtualization with a hive mind:

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/05/nvidia-virtualizes-the-gpu-for-streamed-desktops-and-cloud-gaming/

pic related, its a screenshot of the game mentioned in the article, "Hawken" -a Mech FPS, apparently- that will be playable on your tablet, laptop, pc, thin client, or even TV through streaming services.

Wow. Well, good for them if they can get it to work. I guess they calculate the scenegraph in their cloud and transmit a high or low resolution set of pixels to the device (or something similar). I wonder if that can be extended to 2D video. For example streaming a movie without having to download the a/v data; just a (close to) realtime stream. It certainly makes pirating games more difficult...

Yeah, im pretty excited about it. i use a netbook the most, and while it's the most convenient/capable machine i got, it sure as hell cant play games like that with any respectable results. i think ill stave off buying a console a little longer, and see what happens here.

shit, if this becomes an android thing, my experia play might be back in the running...

first of all, inb4 take it to /v/, cuz im OP and fuck you.

Seems Elder Scrolls Online will be doing the same old MMO bullshit (hotbar, 3rd person, and surely plenty of grinding). A WoW clone with a Tamrielic wrapper. Hotbar meaning you queue up your attacks and wait for your character model to mosie his way through the list. MMOs do this shit to address the lag spike that comes from 'pwning n00bs' at 3500 miles. I'm kinda lost as to why they would opt to do this, though, especially with an IP like TES...

Console FPS's pull it off 98% of the time, and they have to map complex trajectories like sniper rifle fire, rocket drift, and arcing grenade throws (all of which can dynamically interact with the environment and players on their way to the intended target). Is the expectation that MMOs should be more adaptively scalable to handle server surges, and so they should be dumbed down? The size of the game area cant be that limiting, as some FPS maps are fucking MASSIVE.

and
TL:DR;

How could this NVIDIA streamed GPU model improve latency so that we could actually have a live experience in place of the aging developer crutch that is 'hotbars'? Discuss.

I don't really see how the latency issue can be solved. Where I am the local ISP drops Internet connectivity like sand through fingers. I'll be doing something online and all of a sudden the router can't connect, or the connection just lags forever. Customer support just writes it off as the cost of doing business, so the ISP isn't going to fix jack.

No game developer can control that. The best that can be done is develop some crutch or wedge to give gamers a chance to have fun. I know a guy who was playing online poker against somebody. That somebody was complaining that the guy was cheating, but it wasn't cheating at all. One person had lag on his connection, the other didn't. If you can't solve it with a poker game (just loaded PNGs or JPEGs and a text-based communication protocol), how are you going to solve it with a 3D rendered immersive RPG?

fair enough.
IPv7:redundant routing.
only half-joking.
