Hideaki Anno said that he would ride the bullet trains in Japanese cities and see businessmen reading dirty mangas right out in public, obliviously. He said this indicated that his culture was in decay. He said they allowed a bunch of men to have arrested development with stunted maturity.

Does the Brony Movement indicate decay in our society - or is it just a really good cartoon?

Culture it's not something static, not something that will stay there forever without change, the way how cartoons, food, movies, etc. are made it's culture. The preference of the people to watch mlp is a cultural manifestation, not the decay of the culture. Even if i don't like that show doesn't mean that the culture is decaying.

I think a culture can be said to be in decay when that culture is encouraging behavior that has a cumulative negative effect. The Middle East at one point was the leader in art, philosophy and science (about 700+ years ago). It can be argued that current Middle Eastern culture represents a decayed or devolved culture because many parts of the Middle East are controlled by totalitarian theocracies that reject opposing ideas.

It's relative to a certain extent. I wouldn't think Bronyism (?) would represent a decline in culture unless it somehow encouraged behavior that devolved the rest of society (lower school grades, higher crime levels, lack of general empathy towards others, etc). Talk to a hard core Christian, however and you would get the sense that the Christian believes the world is at it's end time. Increased tolerance of homosexuality, deviation from Biblical scriptures, a black President in the US, etc. would all indicate a decline in culture and the way forward to Armageddon.

It all really depends on your starting assumptions on what the ideal culture is and your ideas on how far reality has deviated from this ideal.

Man creates God
Man kills God
However, Man needs God, because God gives Man confort and a meaning of life.
Without God, Man has to find something else to worship, because otherwise he is lost.

Man finds My Little Pony.
Man happens to be a fat lonely virgin nerd.
Man worships MLP, because he has found something to live through.
Man draws Rule 34 of Fluttershy and writes Applejack fapfiction.
Man turns a mild-mannered and smart kids show into an orgy of depravity and borderline pedophilia.
Man turns into a creep, alienates others, buries deeper in his hugbox.
Man becomes a furry.

In summary, MLP is a good cartoon. Its the obsessive worshipping fanbase that ruins it for everyone.

It does not indicate decay in our society. It's a cartoon show. It's like saying that gunpowder represents a decay in society. Or motorcycles. Or computers.

In all cases you're looking at a thing. Essentially a neutral entity. What people do with that thing is more indicative of society than the thing itself.
