Anyone else read the source material, or are excited about the upcoming Cronenberg film? The trailer is available here: http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/watch-full-trailer-for-david-cronenbergs-cosmopolis-arrives-20120419

Alternatively, a discussion about films adapted from literature.

As much as I like Cronenberg, I'm not terribly excited about this film. Cronenberg's been very hit or miss in his career, and after reading the premise, I find it hard to see why I should care about the main character.

Don't get me wrong. I've never seen Patterson's work, and I'm eager to see him prove his chops after his earlier films, but I don't know if I want to walk into a theater for this one.

As for films adapted from books, "Let The Right One In" is brilliant, "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" is excellent, and "Limitless" is just as substandard as the book that spawned it. (Discuss)

I meant to type Pattinson. Sorry.

Here are a couple of new trailers:

-----------

Admittedly I disliked the book (a novelette perhaps? Not sure...) but I could see Cronenberg making something out of "Cosmopolis". I only read it because I knew Pattinson was going to be in the movie, lolo.

Thank you for the suggestions! I'm currently reading the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series because I am enthralled by the HBO series. While the first season is very faithful to "A Game of Thrones", the second season is a little kooky with plot details in relation to "A Clash of Kings". Not that these books are life-changing, just very entertaining.

(Don't worry about your typo, I dun goofed my grammar in the OP.)

P.S. I have "Cosmopolis" as a .pdf if anyone is interested.

I'll read it. Put it up in /lit/.

A while back I put up a copy of "Who goes there", the basis for the movie "The Thing".

Are you trying to select multiple files, or just one? If it's just one, maybe the file is corrupted somehow.

I just grabbed all the ones you posted. I'll try to read Cosmpolis first. The reviews I've read seem to think Don DeLillo's style is a little self-impressed. What's your take?

Yay! :) I'm glad I can contribute something.

I can't judge DeLillo on a grand scale because "Cosmopolis" is the only thing I've read from him...but yes, the text is very pompous and I struggled with the language quite a bit. If it was DeLillo's intention to leave me feeling alienated and confused (time, setting) throughout the book, then big ups to him. It could be argued that this confusion is intentional, since the majority of the action takes place inside the limousine, shielded from such restraints as time and physical location.

"American Psycho" was sterile in it's language (i.e. drone listings of clothes or whatnot, intentionally of course) but it was at least very easy to follow along. (Another note about AP, at least the idea that Bateman was a monster created from his environment is plausible. I don't know what's going on with DeLillo. I don't understand why the character is an "Icarus Falling" archetype.) "Cosmopolis" was so sterile that I cannot make sense of most of the dialogue. If there was some big philosophical message, then it went over my pleb head.

A number of reviewers basically said the same thing. What's more, one reviewer noted that DeLillo writes like this all the time. I think the main comment was that DeLillo writes modern stories as if he was a writer from 100 years ago (more verbose, etc). It'll be interesting to read when I have time.
