The same reason any celebrity engages in hypocritical behavior. They know what makes them money and they know what placates their critics. So they engage in one and pay lip service to the other.

I grant that Lady Gaga has impressively nailed down the crazy/eccentric act, but I still submit it's an act. I think she sat down with some studio handlers, worked out what needed to get done to get the money coming in, and then says whatever needs to be said to keep fans from jumping ship.
