ITT: Overrated movies.

Crash is a movie about how racism is bad. Because Driving Miss Daisy, The Heat of the Night, American History X, Night of the Living Dead (yeah), White Man's Burden, anything that Spike Lee has done, and a million other movies weren't enough.

Crash is an after school special with cursing and a budget.

Agree? Disagree? Have your own overrated movie? Then tell me about it, nigger.

Look at me I'm so forcibly quirky with my shitty soundtrack and customarily lifeless Michael Cera performance.

Wait I guess that applies to every one of his movies.

Crash doesn't suck because it's about racism, it sucks because it's pretentious garbage that puts racism in baby terms.

How can Crash be overrated when nobody likes it?

Things like that depend on the audience. Remember the movie Philadelphia? A lot of people liked that movie, and Tom Hanks won an award for it.

Turns out a lot of gays didn't like it for one reason or another. Can't remember the exact arguments right now, but I think the it all centered around the idea that it was made by straight people for straight people using a straight person's idea of what gays and AIDs are like.

Crash seems to be regarded as something like that. It's superficial enough that people can watch it comfortably while at the same time claim they're watching something that isn't afraid to confront reality. Or so I'm told. I never saw it, so I can't really say if it was overrated or not.

I will say, though, that what I described above represents a general pattern in Hollywood films. That is, make something that's superficial enough to be generally palatable to the largest demographic, while at the same time have enough of a twist that it can claim to be edgy or confrontational in some way.

Only thing I could see gays being offended about was that Tom Hanks and Antonio Banderas didn't come off as gay. They were weirdly asexual.

It's funny you mention asexuality. According to Wikipedia, there was a scene where Hanks and Banderas were in bed together, but it got cut because it was too much for its time.

I assumed because it came out in the early 90's, the studio was worried about showing a gay relationship in a major studio film with two huge stars.

Seriously, compare Philadelphia with Milk. Although, admittedly in Milk, when they weren't marching somewhere, they were having a lot of sex.
