Good news!
Star Wars is coming to Blu-Ray!

Bad news!
George Lucas fucked with it AGAIN!

Remember that scene at the end of Return of the Jedi where Luke was being force-tasered by the Emperor? Remember how Vader looked at his son, then the Emperor and then redeems himself by grabbing the Emperor and throwing him over the rails?

Well, Georgie-boy decided it wasn't clear the first time around, so he added Vader screaming "Nooo!" just before saving Luke.

'Cause, you know, we needed that clarification. When is he just going to leave it alone?

George just loves hearing Vader shout "Nooo!" huh?

I think the poor guy is actually going senile. I've heard he also believes the 2012 prophecy that the world is going to end. I think Spielberg actually had to apologize for him on occasion.

then why doesn't he just make a star wars prono?

It's actually...not that bad. Unnecessary, sure, but it's not really terrible.

Well, the big problem isn't the change itself. It's that Lucas keeps messing with it. He's not adding to a film, he's changing it to fit some internal vision and he doesn't care what the core audience thinks.

Here's a good essay on the issue:

Good point.

I wonder if after he dies, his kids will come to their senses and release the original trilogy as it was meant to be seen.

I don't think I've seen the original version of Star Wars in nearly fifteen years. That's shocking.

I can't remember where I read the article, but Lucas is fully intending the original cut of the first trilogy to disappear. He's basically said as much in interviews cited in the article. He feels that as the creator of the film, it's his obligation to update it as time goes by. He sees it as a process of refinement.

Basically, he'll keep changing it as long as he's got an inkling to, and he'll allow the originals to fall away in time.

I get what he was doing...trying to update it for every generation, so that they all have that cultural milestone.

The problem is that the original version is timeless already. Minor things like updating effects or Vader's "No...NOO!" dub (the only issue I have with it is that it strips the scene of any real subtlety) are one thing, but adding a badly animated CGI dance number to Return of the Jedi was a slap in the dick.
