Umm.. Mine, I guess. I use some bastard combination of GNOME (fallback) and LXDE, which is why you can't read the folders. Haven't yet figured out how to get Nautilus to cooperate, cuz' I'm a stupid idiot.

Also, if anybody asks, yes I do make frequent use of everything in the top panel. And everything in the two hidden ones.

The program I'm tracking with is Ardour. http://ardour.org/ Awesome DAW that I've been using for about 4 years now.

The organ is a VST called Organized Trio. Just recently found it. Does a really sweet Hammond emulation. I got it here: http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?plugin=ORGANized_Trio&id=283

It's Windows native but runs in Wine. I use a program called FeSTige as a VST host. Compatibility is kinda hit and miss, though.

Sweet, thanks. I'll check em out.

My old man masters & mixes in Winblows XP/Vista, and I'm trying to get him to make the jump to a Linux machine, or at the very least an Apple (His case and graphical art being the only worthwhile excuses to play with the Fruit Box, IMO).

He's a real tight wad, and once I showed him how to crack some paid plugins and such, he's been saving alot of money, so I figure I've got him in a corner on it, and It's only a matter of time - Linux being free/free and all.

Is there a distro you would recommend? He seriously only boots the machine to work, and it's never seen a series of tubes. It would need to be easy to pick up, and of course be designed with audio management in mind. Oh, and easy to frag and reinstall. He hates HDD platters, or something.

I use AV Linux http://www.bandshed.net/AVLinux.html Used to use Ubuntu Studio, but Ubuntu pissed me off really bad last year so I said fuck 'em. Once I installed it, I found that I had to do less tweaking than I have with any other distro I've used.

One thing to look out for is what kind of audio interface he uses. Some of them play nicer with Linux than others.

And as far as reinstalling goes, Unix-like systems actually store data in a logical manner (unlike Windows). Thus, you don't have the fragmentation issues that you do with a M$ box.

maybe i phrased it badly, on the reinstall thing: fragmentation isnt an issue really. when i say he frags often, i meant like grenades. his drives are formatted like 2-3x a week (oddly enough, an 8 year old 5400x drive hes got is still going strong) although that would be much less frequent with linux.

I guess a better way to put it: how possible would it be to script the reinstall of a backup? old habits die hard, and im sure he would insist that purging his system often would be ideal.

also, thanks for the link. ill check it out after the weekend.

Ah, I see. Can't say on that one, unfortunately. I've never had to do it myself. In 4 years of using Linux, I've only had a file system go tits up one me once. At that point, my distro was 2 years old, so I just went to a newer version. That was actually what prompted me to dump Ubuntu. New shitty interface that they implemented whether most users like it or not? Fuck that noise.
