I'm trying to install Crunchbang on a Dell Inspiron Mini Netbook. I've installed it both to a thumbdrive and the harddrive, when I boot from either of them it gets to the "GRUB loading. Welcome to GRUB!" screen and just stops. But the install of it that I have on the thumbdrive works and boots fine in any other computer.
How do I fix and/or get past this? I really don't want to use Ubuntu any more.

maybe your bios isn't configured properly?

I've check it up and down and changed various settings just to see if it would work, but I got zip.

Also I just realized that if there was something wrong with the bios then it would not even be able to get to the GRUB screen in the first place.

Not necessarily. Usually trying different boot options helps. I take it you already did this as in tried to boot from every hdd?

Well, there's only the one HD in the netbook. One It gets to that screen I can't do anything. No button on the keyboard affects it in any way.

I wish I could help you, bro. I switched to Crunchbang on my laptop just yesterday. Unfortunately I'm pretty lost right now, if there's only one HDD in your machine.

Have you written the GRUB loader in your MBR? It gives you the option. Maybe try "yes" if you have done so or "no" if you haven't.

Yeah, I clicked "Yes" during the install. So it should just be installing it to where it normally is supposed to by default?

Well, I'm really not a pro when it comes to this but you can tell most distros to NOT write GRUB in the MBR. Maybe you can reinstall Crunchbang and chose "no" when it asks. But it could be that you have to restore your MBR first.

Damn. I tried to do that, but then it asked where I wanted to put it, but that part was too technical for me to figure out. ( ._.)

I believe you can create a /boot partition before installing crunchbang and install GRUB there. But don't forget to repair the MBR before you try anything new.

That being said, I don't know if it helps. The only thing left to do would be to hit the different boards (crunchbang has one with great support).

Another possibility would be to try this: http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst ... and install Openbox and all the applications you want. It should be practically the same as Crunchbang without the pre-installed themes and such. Since Debian is pretty stable, maybe it works for you.
