Woah. The damn government was all in the news about their active border crime program that was supposed to end prisons as we know them but something has gone wrong.

Now everyone is trapped within the boundaries of the property that they are in. People in public rights of way can travel as far as that right of way will allow but anyone trying to cross the boundary of whatever property they are in will die.

How long can you live using the resources available to you?

I wouldn't worry about it. Sure there would be gang members and all that, but also people in prison for less violent crimes like larceny. Being free in a walled city (like Escape from New York) means there's still plenty of shit to scrounge around for, and the government would probably provide ration drops if for no other reason than to avoid future violations of the Geneva Convention or the Red Cross.

I guess people could horde those supplies, but it's a pretty tenuous grasp considering more come in each day.

Worst problem is gang warfare. Most of the prison population is in a gang, and throwing all the US prisoners into one prison...well, that's a lot of gangs in a small amount of space. Although as prisoners, they wouldn't have access to guns outside of what's in the city already, and when they use up all the ammo, those guns are just clubs. I suppose they could fight hand to hand, but I don't know how often that would happen. At the very least, bystanders probably wouldn't get killed, like in a driveby.

But I dunno, I might be an idealist, but I think the relative freedom combined with the second chance that freedom provides actually would contribute to a civilized society. Maybe not a utopia, but not necessarily a dystopia, either.

Hmmm. I was thinking smaller regions. If you were at home you wouldn't be able to leave the yard. If you were at Walmart or KFC you'd never be able to leave the parking lot.

I left public rights of way as a wildcard for fun.

I would retaliate in a very cautious manner. I'd probably resort to digging underground tunnels that network through the city/town so that everyone can sneak around without getting into too much trouble. The only problem with this is if some coward decides to snitch. But if that was suspected then I suppose I wouldn't be able to afford to let them do as they wish, after all, it's not just about my safety, it'd be in the best interest of everyone around me too.
