there was a tv show called Jericho in which a terrorist cell set off a shitload of nuclear bombs in most major cities which plunged the small town of Jericho into chaos and confusion. it showed what they did to survive and what to expect. It was an awesome show. bit too much cliffhanging endings but I think it did a good job in portraying a post apocalyptic USA
