I used to know a guy in high school who could be appropriately designated "one of those douchebags." His favorite insults were "fag" and "queer", he thought that it was acceptable to punch people for annoying him, and he superficially indulged in almost every generic male interest to disguise his insecurities. He had forced, insincere religious and political views that only really served as an excuse to shit on people and be more of an obnoxious, arrogant, prick. He did associate with the geeks and liked "nerd stuff", but only the masculine and public examples like Dragonball or God of War. He thought that never being an elf and always a barbarian in D&D put him a cut above the rest.

Then I met him again in college when I was an underclassman. He finally came out of the closet and was dating a boy, distanced himself from religion in general, and adopted taste in less mainstream (but more spastic) nerd shit. He was no longer afraid to be himself and didn't wear a mask beyond closed doors.

And he hadn't changed at all.

He was now deep-kissing his boyfriend in front of the booths tended by the campus religious groups and laughing at them afterwards. He copped the "refined connoisseur" attitude about moe anime or obscure indie games with the other nerds in their designated hangout. Once I heard him yelling so the whole lounge could hear about how anyone who didn't min-max in RPGs was a "false gamer." He effeminately flipped his wrist towards people he knew belonged to the College Republicans to see if he could bait them into saying something and would slap anyone in reach, even his boyfriend, for even playfully teasing him as a friend. He had even become more careless with profanity in mixed company.

Tl;dr, being honest with himself and getting his act together regarding his sexuality didn't make him any less of an asshole at heart. He merely redirected his intrinsic jackassery towards new targets. A leopard might change its spots, but then it's just a the same big cat with a palette swap. I'll need to wait it out to see if Mr. Stiles is dedicated to becoming a better individual.
